Pay Your Taxes With Your Credit Card

January 7th, 2009 | No comments. | Posted in Tax Questions, Tax Tips

Most people don’t realize that the IRS will accept any major credit card (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, or Discover) to pay your taxes. The easiest way to do this is, of course, to e-file. When you use TurboTax, TaxAct, or such software, you can input your credit card information right into their secure system. You may also do this on paper taxes by just filling out the proper information on your forms. Good news for those of us who owe money and don’t have any on hand.

The Right Tax Software for E-Filing

December 12th, 2008 | No comments. | Posted in Tax Questions, Tax Tips, Taxes

Tax season is upon us. Seems like it’s always almost that time, doesn’t it? And I know what you are thinking. I don’t have the money to pay someone to prepare my tax return! Well, no worries, you are a part of the technological age. With the lovely internet, filing your taxes is as easy as ever. But there is overwhelming choices in software! Which do you choose? Some helpful tips!

The e-filing software you choose will depend on the uniqueness of your tax situaton. For our most complex of tax filers, those of you with a great deal of investments or privately owned businesses, you will want to choose software that allows you to easily track your deductions. Top choices for this are TurboTax (premiere edition: $24.95 state, $59.95 fed) or CompleteTax ($44.90 state, $29.95 fed). These programs are easy to use and   extremely accurate in their calculations.

Now for you easy tax filers with less to track, go with regular TurboTax ($29.99 state, free fed), TaxCut ($49.95 state, $19.95 fed) or TaxAct ($13.95 state, free fed). These walk you through the 1040EZ and other easy forms. With a few answered questions and quick calculations, you will not hide from your taxes again.

Check out our Reviews of these great programs!

TaxAct Software Review

December 10th, 2008 | No comments. | Posted in Software Reviews

TaxAct has long been one of our favorite eFiling solutions. It is affordable and easy to use and receives our Bronze Award. TaxAct falls behind TurboTax and TaxCut because of it’s lack of advanced features such as investment advice and retirement planning. For simple tax returns and first time filers, TaxAct is good choice.

Intuitive Navigation:

TaxAct navigation is intuitive and easy to use. You can easily jump from section to section and the questions are easy to understand.

Novice-Friendly:

TaxAct allows you to either answer tax questions or directly enter data into forms to complete your return. You can also import W-2s directly from participating employers. The ease of navigation and the simplicity of questions makes the service very novice-friendly.

Ease of Installation/Setup:

TaxAct was exceptionally easy to set up. We experience no problems or complications.

Feature Set:

TaxAct provides free federal eFiling and state filing at a very reasonable price.
You can determine the future impact of life events such as marriage, having children, changing jobs, and more.
TaxAct will pay your penalties if any of the calculations are incorrect.

Help/Documentation/Search:

The help sections provides useful information including J.K. Lasser’s Expert Tax Help and tech support through telephone, mail, fax, and email. The FAQ section is useful – although the search tool returned some inapplicable results.

Summary:
TaxAct is a great service at a great price. It provides all the necessary features for simple eFiling of both your federal and state tax returns. TaxAct receives our BRONZE award.
